Welcome to Aitomistic Lab@XMU. These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Aitomistic Lab@XMU platform at https://atom.xmu.edu.cn/ ("the Platform"), operated by the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University ("we", "us"). By registering for or using the Platform, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Platform.
Please read Section 4 (Ownership of Outputs) and Section 7 (Scientific accuracy) in particular. They set out what you own and what you must verify.
Aitomistic Lab@XMU is a research computing platform for computational chemistry. It hosts Protomia — a conversational research environment that lets you run quantum-chemistry and machine-learning calculations, analyse results, and generate figures, code and text by orchestrating scientific software and large language models — and may host further tools from time to time.
These Terms apply to the Platform and to everything hosted on it, including Protomia. Where a hosted tool has its own additional terms, those apply alongside these Terms.
The Platform is research infrastructure operated by an academic unit. It is not a commercial product, and it carries no service level (Section 10).
2.1 The Platform is provided to researchers, students and collaborators for scientific work. Access may be granted to members of Xiamen University and to external academic and industrial users at our discretion.
2.2 You must have the legal capacity to accept these Terms. If you use the Platform on behalf of an institution or company, you confirm you are authorised to accept these Terms on its behalf.
2.3 Provide accurate registration information and keep it current.
2.4 You are responsible for all activity under your account. Do not share your credentials or let another person use your account. Notify us promptly if you believe your account has been compromised.
3.1 "Inputs" means everything you supply to the Platform — prompts, structures, coordinates, files, data and instructions. You keep all rights you have in your Inputs. We claim none.
3.2 You confirm that you are entitled to supply your Inputs, and that doing so breaches no law, third-party right, confidentiality obligation or agreement.
3.3 Do not upload material you are not free to send to a third party. Depending on the model you select, Inputs and Outputs may be transmitted to external model providers outside our control (Section 5). Treat unpublished results, confidential collaborations and personal data accordingly.
4.1 You own your Outputs. "Outputs" means the results generated for you through the Platform, including text, code, data, structures, figures, images and cover art. As between you and us, you retain all right, title and interest in your Outputs to the extent such rights exist. We claim no ownership of Outputs, and to the extent we hold any right, title or interest in an Output, we assign it to you.
4.2 No restriction on how you use them. You may use, reproduce, adapt, publish, distribute and commercialise your Outputs for any lawful purpose. This expressly includes academic publication; submission to publishers as figures, graphical abstracts, journal cover art or supporting information; use in theses and grant applications; and commercial use. No further permission from us is required, and we charge no royalty.
4.3 What we can and cannot grant. We can only assign rights we hold. Whether an Output attracts copyright at all, and who counts as its author, is determined by applicable law and not by these Terms — in a number of jurisdictions, material generated without sufficient human authorship may not be protected by copyright. You remain responsible for ensuring that your use of an Output does not infringe the rights of others.
4.4 Similar Outputs. Similar Inputs may produce similar or identical Outputs for different users. Your rights in your Output do not extend to another user's Output, and we do not guarantee that any Output is unique.
4.5 No branding imposed. We do not require you to display our name or marks on your Outputs, and we place no mandatory identifier in them beyond anything required by applicable law or by a third-party provider (Sections 5 and 8).
5.1 The Platform orchestrates third-party components, including open-source scientific software (such as MLatom and PySCF) and large language models provided by external companies.
5.2 When you select a model, your Inputs and the resulting Outputs may be processed by that provider under its own terms, which may permit the provider to use content to improve its models. Those terms apply to you directly and we cannot vary them. The model in use is shown in the Platform at the point you select it. The set of available models changes over time; for the current list and a link to each provider's terms, contact us at the address in Section 15.
5.3 Open-source components remain subject to their own licences. Nothing in these Terms grants you rights in third-party software beyond those licences.
5.4 We are not responsible for the operation, accuracy or reliability of third-party software or models.
You agree not to:
7.1 Outputs are not verified. The Platform combines automated reasoning with numerical software. It can produce results that are wrong, incomplete, internally inconsistent, or that describe a calculation different from the one actually performed.
7.2 You are the scientist. You are responsible for checking every result you rely on — including that the method, structure, level of theory and settings are those you intended. Do not treat an Output as a verified result, and do not publish one without independent checking.
7.3 The Platform is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of accuracy, reliability, uninterrupted operation or fitness for a particular purpose.
8.1 Citation. If your work relies substantially on the Platform, please cite the tool you used (for example, Protomia) by name and version, and cite the underlying scientific software according to its own request.
8.2 Disclosure is your responsibility. Publishers increasingly require authors to disclose the use of AI tools, and the rules differ by publisher and by artifact type — manuscript text, figures, graphical abstracts, cover art. You are responsible for knowing and meeting your publisher's policy. On request, we will supply a factual description of how a given Output was produced, including which components were involved, to support such a disclosure.
8.3 Where applicable law requires the labelling of AI-generated content, we will comply with that requirement, and you must not remove or obscure any label applied for that purpose.
9.1 We store your account details, conversations, Inputs, Outputs and job records so that the Platform can function and so that we can operate, support and debug it.
9.2 Our staff may access this data where necessary to run, support, secure or debug the Platform, to investigate misuse, or where required by law.
9.3 We do not sell your data, and we do not use your Inputs or Outputs to train our own models. Aggregate, de-identified usage statistics may be used to report on and improve the Platform. Third-party model providers handle content under their own terms (Section 5).
9.4 We handle personal information in accordance with the Personal Information Protection Law of the People's Republic of China and applicable university policy.
9.5 You may request deletion of your account and its stored conversations by contacting us. Some records may be retained where required by law or university policy. We are not obliged to return or restore data after an account is closed — keep your own copies of anything you need.
The Platform runs on shared academic research infrastructure. It may be unavailable, slow or interrupted because of maintenance, upgrades, cluster load or failure. No service level is guaranteed, and we may change, suspend or discontinue features at any time. We are not a backup service.
11.1 We may suspend or terminate your access for breach of these Terms, for misuse of shared resources, or where required by the University or by law.
11.2 You may stop using the Platform at any time and request closure of your account.
11.3 Termination does not affect your rights in Outputs already generated (Section 4), nor does it release you from obligations arising before termination.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we and Xiamen University are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential or special loss, or for loss of data, results, publication opportunities or profits, arising from your use of the Platform or from reliance on any Output. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.
We may update these Terms. Material changes will be announced on the Platform, and the version and effective date above will be updated. If you do not accept a change, stop using the Platform and request closure of your account; continued use after the effective date of a change means you accept it.
14.1 These Terms are governed by the laws of the People's Republic of China (mainland).
14.2 Disputes should first be addressed through good-faith discussion. Failing that, either party may bring proceedings before the competent people's court at the operator's domicile.
14.3 Language. These Terms are published in Chinese and English. The two versions are intended to have the same meaning. In the event of any inconsistency, the Chinese version prevails.
14.4 If any provision is held invalid or unenforceable, it is severable and the remaining provisions continue in force. Headings are for convenience only.
